 KATHERINE OF CARRICK – THE WAY OF THE WARRIOR;

NEW CHILDREN’S BOOK FEATURES CARRICKFERGUS CASTLE

A children’s book set amidst the historic Carrickfergus Castle is getting ready to make a BIG impact on the children’s literature scene. Katherine of Carrick - The Way of the Warrior, written by Annie Holmes, features Katherine the world’s youngest history detective and her side-kick Bienkie the bear.

Aimed at children 7+, Katherine of Carrick champions a female protagonist and encourages experimentation with language as the heroine (Katherine) loves BIG words. The story makes history adventurous and fun whilst addressing personal and social issues such as friendship, anxiety, bullying and living with the elderly.

Annie Holmes was inspired to write Katherine of Carrick - The Way of the Warrior during her time at 1 Larne Road, a Victorian red-bricked building designed by Ulster architect Samuel Patrick Close, located a few minutes from the historic Carrickfergus Castle. Annie explains;

“The entire location - from our house, the garden and Carrickfergus Castle, which we could see every day from our home, was a remarkable catalyst for Katherine’s adventures. The fantastic history of the area was just so captivating and with all its amazing myths and legends the scene was set for creating a story filled with exploration and adventure. The idea for the book really took off when my beloved young nephews came to stay. Through watching them interact with the surroundings I discovered Katherine and her amazing world and the characters she meets along the way.”

Annie added:

“With decreasing literacy rates and a shortage of female protagonists, alternative role models are needed to empower children. Katherine of Carrick shows children that knowledge is the power to make anything possible and that fears can be overcome.”

An audio book is available and features the voice talent of Morwenna Banks. Morwenna’s voice over credits include; Peppa Pig, Dangermouse and Ronja, The Robber’s Daughter.
