Me, You, Us Them

New Northern Ireland play about race

Next Generation of Northern Irish Talent in New Play About Race

Stefan Dunbar, nephew of Enniskillen star Adrian Dunbar, joins Melissa Dean, a compelling mixed-race actress with Northern Irish roots, in a new play called Me You Us Them by Terra Nova Artistic Director, Andrea Montgomery. Effortlessly creating myriad points of view, this talented duo bring Northern Ireland citizens from eight different cultures to life, including rural Armagh, Sudan, Belfast, Hong Kong, Nigeria, Iran, Jamaica and Donegal. Inspired by conversations with real people from across Northern Ireland; Me You Us Them is fresh modern theatre delivered with raw talent and simplicity.

The play introduces characters through a series of monologues, then shows lives gradually intersecting and overlapping in surprising ways, to build a picture of life as we don’t usually see it on the Northern Ireland stage. Me You Us Them is an angry, but funny, occasionally shocking play, which ultimately leaves us uplifted and thoughtful.

The project is funded by the Arts Council of Northern Ireland, Belfast City Council, the Executive Office via EastSide Partnership, and Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council Good Relations.

Creative Director of Terra Nova Productions, Andrea Montgomery said;

“I’m delighted to close our 10th Anniversary year with work by this outstanding duo of actors. Rehearsal have been a joy - hilarious and moving, and sparkling with creative chemistry. I hope that audiences will enjoy the actor’s talent as much as I have enjoyed directing them. My thanks go out to everyone who generously shared their stories and made the work possible. I’m delighted to be offering the play across Northern Ireland, building on the work of previous playwrights like Daragh Carville and Shannon Yee who have lent their talent to Terra Nova’s intercultural mission and our ongoing Arrivals Project. I’d like to thank the funders who have supported us this far. Here’s to the next ten years.”

Lizzie Devlin, Arts Development Officer, Arts Council of Northern Ireland, added;

“The Arts Council is pleased to support Terra Nova through National Lottery and public funding. This powerful production will take audiences on a journey and we’re delighted to see it tour around the region, helping to bring great art to all.”

Although the themes are challenging, the play avoids strong language and is suitable for young people aged 12 and up.

Me You Us Them is on tour across Northern Ireland; with public performances taking place at the Marketplace Theatre Armagh March 15, The Riverside Theatre March 21, The Seamus Heaney Home Place March 22, Down Arts Centre March 23, 12-13 Shaftsbury Square Belfast March 28 and 29. Performances are also taking place in schools across Northern Ireland.
